Monthly Archives: August 2012

There is something to be said about community during good times and hard times. We usually have a tendency to come together- whether it be in celebration or when someone is facing a hardship. All of us who are connected to The Writers Lounge belong to a community of writers, authors and readers. And we need your help…

The Writers Lounge is fast approaching its first anniversary (August 22nd) and it’s time for this show host and blogger to thank everyone for your kindness and support over the past year. It’s been an awesome ride! It’s also time to reflect on some of the wonderful friendships that I have gained through this past year. To the 29 authors of The Writers Lounge:  You have touched me with a wealth of  brilliant tales which your books have brought and more importantly, I have heard some amazing, inspirational heartwarming stories that reside behind your written words. Yes, there are some truly wonderful people out there who have touched us with their stories; both within the written word and outside of their books, and in the friendships that they have offered me.

One of those amazing authors, and a dear friend, is Rachelle Rose Hruska. In 1999 Rachelle battled and overcame a brain disorder that stole many years from her life- going all the way back to her childhood. (Read the review from her book: The Angel Within Me HERE)

After facing down her adversity in 1999, she grew from that period of her life and focused her energies on helping others who might be faced with the same brain disorder that she conquered. Not being one to reach out with just words, hugs and a smile, Rachelle opened up a coffee shop in River Falls, Wisconsin called, appropriately: Earth Angel’s Coffee House.  It is there, over the last several years that Rachelle has offered free hugs, music, coffee and a whole lot of what the world needs more of: LOVE.

It is there, at the coffee house, where a whole community went for comfort on a cold winter’s day. A cup of coffee to warm the hands, a friendly conversation, healing circles and music were also offered to the people of their community and beyond. It has also been a place to gather for comfort when tragedy strikes- as it did just recently with the murder of 3 young girls who lived in River Falls.

Now, because of some financial troubles, Earth Angels Coffee House is in danger of closing its doors forever.

We are asking for your help from our community of authors, writers, readers and others to keep the doors to Earth Angel’s open- and let’s give the people of River Falls the gift of place- and the gift of love that Rachelle has been so generous in giving over the years.

PLEASE buy her new revised book: *THE TRUTH ABOUT ME <Click it to buy it!

*Formerly published in 2000 under the title, The Angel Within Me,. Rachelle has rewritten her story adding information she previously was not ready to reveal.

I’m about to be as blunt and honest as I can: I’m a lousy liar!  I’m really no good at trying to fib or even when attempting to launch a “white lie”- it sends someone’s bull shit meter off the scale if they are standing anywhere near me.

So, I don’t subscribe to being dishonest- it doesn’t do anyone any good, it can seriously harm your reputation, it can hurt a lot of people and it can destroy a lot of relationships. I guess that is why a few people have told me: “That is one reason why you are a good paranormal investigator.”

Really now, my “being honest”, also depends on your perspective of how you honestly see the whole ghost hunting craze that has been sweeping the country in the last several years. There are many who will wave us off with the backs of their hands, dismissing us all as a bunch of over imaginative, over excitable kooks, who will jump and holler “ghost!” at anything that moves.  Many detractors will say that we have a tendency to  drool and that we come very close to wetting ourselves when we see a photo that contains a dust particle “orb”. They go on to claim that we have inclinations to totally and thoroughly soak ourselves when our iPhone speaks to us with a robotic voice through a “Ghost Radar” app.

Yes, how can we Honestly say, given all that, that we can actually believe that we are investigating the existence of ghosts??  My honest answer is: Until you’ve experienced, in person, ALL of the phenomenon that presents itself during an investigation (And yes, we use other credible devices to measure our findings.)- one has to keep an open mind. In the end you are forced to come to a conclusion: Can what we experienced be explained naturally, or did we experience something that cannot be explained? And if it can’t be explained, wouldn’t that open the possibility of us being in the presence of a ghost or other paranormal activity?

This is why we take our investigations so very seriously. We report the facts as we witnessed them. Room temperatures, EMF readings (electrical magnetic fields), digital voice recordings and sound recordings, video recordings, photos as well as our own written personal experiences are all recorded at the scene of an investigation. It is also very important, when investigating, to investigate with a group of at least 3 or 4 people. Being with others adds credibility to your findings. Believe me- if you are trying to bend the truth, and you have someone in your group like me- you’re not going to get away with it.

With being part of a legitimate paranormal investigative group- Honesty should be at the top of your priorities and the reporting of your “facts” to the public should never be about bravado and ego. Your report should always include the considerations of others who worked on your team; and be sure to include all of them in your acknowledgments and always give them credit for the work that they do, whether it be their notes, writings or  video work. It is only the right thing to do.

The following video reviews a book that was written by Author and Paranormal Investigator, Adrian Lee. It  will speak for itself and includes many of the same themes that I just wrote about. I would just like to say this to whoever decides to watch it:

If you were on this team mentioned in the video, or if you are a member of another paranormal group, who agrees that a member of a group should have the right to present your investigative findings in their own way- which is in any way less than honest- then please consider leaving the paranormal investigative community. You are serving no one when you stand behind dishonesty in any way shape or form.

To the rest: Happy Ghost Hunting and keep it HONEST!

Let’s begin. First, take your clothes off. I won’t look. Now throw them away. Yes, that’s right, you won’t need them here. Let me explain. You are about to throw out or expel (That’s a better word) everything that you and your feeble worthless mind needed to cling to, to stay alive and informed in this crazy screwed up world. That’s right, we’re going to let it ALL go; the nakedness will eventually FREE you! *Pause* Well, maybe you should at least wrap that towel around you for the time being. I’m just a wee bit uncomfortable seeing you like that- but I’ll get used to it, after awhile.

So why are we doing this little exercise you ask?  Plainly put: Sometimes LIFE needs an enema. Personally, I’m ready for a total cleaning out of the cavities that make up my body and mind and I think you should be ready and willing to go forward with the fecal like extrication too. In fact, I insist upon it. Yes, YOU! I’m talking to YOU! Ram that hose up into yourself, where all of your thoughts, prejudices, religious and political beliefs live, go to the faucet and turn it all the way on, full blast, and let that torrent rush of water clean you out as if Niagara Falls was rushing full gorge through the pathetic inside channels of your body and brain.   Give it about 20 minutes because, honestly- there’s a LOT of crap in there- to get out.

*Watching and listening to the clock tic*

There. Didn’t that feel good?  Currently you haven’t got one lousy thought inside of your miserable head. Really though, it’s the way it should be. You’re starting over. Zip! Just like that, you’re like a new born baby. Now sit there and be quiet while I talk.

Me, on the other hand- I still have the crap of life inside of me, simmering there like a stinking pile of steaming excrement. But it’s a good thing that I do because without all that rancid putrid waste  and the thoughts that go with it, I wouldn’t be able to converse with you right now which is needed because you have to learn all over again what life should be about. And the best way I can tell you about what life should be about is to tell you what it shouldn’t be about. *PAUSE* Did I lose you? Tap your foot twice if you understand. Good. Thanks. Here’s what makes life miserable and why you were subjected to that somewhat unpleasant experience with the hose, unless, a-hum, you’re into that kind of thing. Of course… you’re not into anything right now…so here’s the list:

GREED- an overwhelming desire to have more of something such as money than is actually needed.

DISHONESTY- the use of lies or deceit, or the tendency to be deceitful.

HATRED- a feeling of intense hostility towards somebody or something.

PREJUDICE- a preformed opinion, usually an unfavorable one, based on insufficient knowledge, irrational feelings, or inaccurate stereotypes.

IMPOLITENESS- not showing proper manners or respect.

UNFAITHFULNESS-  untrue to commitments, duties, beliefs, or ideals.

There. That should be a good start for you. There’s a lot of emptiness in your brain right now- so make sure you file these things under what not to be. I personally have seen a drastic rise in the above behaviors within this cosmic year of 2012 and frankly it gives me pause to ponder if the Mayans may have been right. Maybe we are due for a vast planetary change at the end of this year.

One can only hope that we can learn to focus more on the one emotion that I haven’t told you about yet.  And that emotion and behavior would be filed under what to be. And really, that’s all that’s needed. It’s the exact opposite of what the above behaviors and emotions flow from.   It’s called Love.

Now, please pass the hose….

By Max E. Stone

Around, Around, and Around they go. Where the blood stops?…Who knows?

Jonathan and Lee Ann are two high school classmates who have their differences. Jonathan is white and Lee Ann is black. After Jonathan bumps into Lee Ann in the hallway, sending her books to the ground, he calls her a “black bitch” and the relationship heads off on a very rough and contentious path. The bigotry consumes not only Jonathan but his father as well and the two families of both Jonathan and Lee Ann become embroiled in a racially charged feud that threatens to become worse.  All of the dynamics of the story begin to change when Lee Ann finds Jonathan badly hurt and near death from a car accident.  She is largely responsible for saving Jonathan’s life but the suspicion of bigotry still hovers over Jonathan, even as he tries to extricate himself from the racial hatred that he learned from his father.

The relationship between Jonathan, Lee Ann and their families is absorbing and develops dramatically throughout the story and the future between the teens is tested once again by a traumatic violent event that threatens to rip them apart forever.

The narrative started off a bit slow and the introduction of the characters was a tad confusing – but the pace soon picked up once the plot became clearer and before long, I was fully engaged and really liking this story. The dramatics were powerful and well used in several scenes and it even managed to pick up in its intensity all the way to the exciting and climatic end.

If not for the slightly sluggish beginning, this book would have hit 5 stars. However, this author deserves much credit for crafting a story that will give you pause to consider where we are right now as a society in our thoughts over race, love and relationships between two people. Be ready for it, this story will stimulate your tear ducts.

I give August To Life 4 stars.

Apart From Love was written by Uvi Poznansky and published by Amazon Digital Services in 2012. You may purchase it at Visit the author at: Uvi Art.Blog

By Uvi Poznansky

Written with passionate conviction, this story is being told by two of its characters: Ben, a twenty-seven years old student, and Anita, a plain-spoken, spunky, uneducated redhead, freshly married to Lenny, his aging father. Behind his back, Ben and Anita find themselves increasingly drawn to each other. They take turns using an old tape recorder to express their most intimate thoughts, not realizing at first that their voices are being captured by him.
Meanwhile, Lenny is trying to keep a secret from both of them: his ex-wife, Ben’s mother, a talented pianist, has been stricken with an early-onset alzheimer. Taking care of her gradually weighs him down. What emerges in these characters is a struggle, a desperate, daring struggle to find a path out of conflicts, out of isolation, from guilt to forgiveness.

The author has taken a very complicated premise, involving three complex characters and interlaced them all into a story that will seep into the hearts and souls of many readers. It is surely destined to become a novel that you will well remember for a long time to come.

The richness of this tale becomes beautifully evident in the way the author delves into every intricate detail of the story. Not overly done, the narrative fits perfectly, pulling you along, tantalizing you to want more.  From the emotional hinges that grip each character to the wonderful visions of their places in time, I was caught by the romantic taboo appeal of the tale and the heartbreak that life can sometimes deliver to those who find themselves standing on the precipice of love.

As a backdrop to the story, or more appropriately described, a musical melody of memories continues to play in the background- calling out to Ben’s father, Lenny.  It’s the devastating illness of Alzheimer’s that has robbed Lenny’s ex-wife of her musical past and it also has a huge impact on Ben, who has to also cope with the loss of his mother.

If there are first time novels that truly belong on The New York Times Best Sellers List- this one is it!   This read, from beginning to end, remained solidly at the very top of the star rating scale for me. Excellent work!

I give Apart From Love 5 stars.
